A Covid Pause & a USCF ‘National Master’ (NM) in the making:

Our academy student Rohit Guha started his chess journey with GM Andrey Gutov in January 2017 (USCF 890) and made a steady and fast progress to USCF rating 1900 in 3 years. As COVID affected all over the board tournaments, Rohit practiced regularly and continued his chess classes with GM Gutov and played many online games. His positional understanding and tactical knowledge improved significantly and now he was waiting for the over the board tournaments to start again.

Starting in May 2021, Rohit participated in 11 major tournaments, both invitational and Open class – including US National Open in Las Vegas and World Open in Philadelphia and gained 208 rating points, with a current USCF rating of 2140. Rohit beat many National Masters, one FIDE masters, and most importantly an emphatic win over one of the top rated GMs (his first over the board game with a GM) Vladimir Georgiev (USCF 2550, FIDE 2461, ranked #1 player in the state of Illinois) in 2021 IL Open Chess Championship.

At an expert level, this is a significant achievement and Rohit did so by his dedication and hard work. In July 2021, Rohit achieved his USCF ‘Candidate Master’ (CM) norm due to his recent tournament performance. Congratulations to Rohit and we wish his more future success!
